The Monongahela River Valley in Southwestern Pennsylvania was blessed with an abundance of natural resources including rich farm land and a seemingly endless supply of coal. After the Revolutionary War, numerous small towns began to sprout up along the banks of the great River to take advantage of these resources. Freeport was one of those towns. Freeport was laid out in 1800 by Colonel Edward Cook, a prominent landowner in the region, a leader in state and local government, and a close friend to George Washington. Freeport changed its name to Cookstown in 1825 in honor of the Colonel and then to Fayette City in 1854. This book traces the history of Fayette City from a small boat building and farming community to a hotbed of glass manufacturing and finally to a powerhouse in the coal industry by the 1920s. Fayette City overcame several devastating fires and floods and an unflattering reputation well-earned during the Civil War to become one of the principal towns in the Valley. Its citizens possessed a keen entrepreneurial spirit, a profound work ethic, and an unbounded optimism for the future that continually drove it to higher ground.
