Badlands To Blue Water: A Sailor's Story - Vietnam

Description for Badlands To Blue Water: A Sailor's Story - Vietnam

Chief Schussler recalls his enlistment in the United States Navy amid the turbulence of the anti-war movement in 1969. He recounts the enlistment process, his training, and his service aboard the guided-missile frigate USS Sterett DLG-31 in the coastal waters of Vietnam from 1969 through 1972. In his comprehensive, informative, and insightful account, he takes you aboard a modern-day man of war for a glimpse at the day-to-day lives of “Blue Water Sailors” and their little-known contribution to the war effort in Vietnam. The USS Sterett was part of a forward-deployed naval force homeported in Yokosuka, Japan, during the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1970. Following a much-needed yard period, the ship was again deployed to Southeast Asia on two more occasions in 1972 and 1973. In addition to operating in the Tonkin Gulf, she patrolled the Sea of Japan as part of the peacetime aerial reconnaissance program (implemented following the downing of a US reconnaissance plane by North Korea), and the Taiwan Straits to reinforce the United States’ support of Taiwan in the face of Chinese aggression. In the words of Admiral B. A. Clarey, Commander and Chief Pacific Fleet, “The USS Sterett fought in the most significant naval engagement of the Vietnam War.”The Sterett claims the distinction of being the first ship to shoot down a MIG aircraft with a Terrier surface to air missile, simultaneously fending off a bevy of enemy torpedo boats, all the while receiving shore-based artillery fire.Admiral Clarey went on to say, “You have hurt the enemy badly, and you have been responsible for saving a great many friendly lives. In each assigned task or mission, Sterett has performed superbly.” This is an accurate account of the ship and crew that fought her.
